Some very handy reminders from The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse – Cyber Monday Shopping Tips 2011.
Also:
- If an email offer touting a “Cyber Monday” special looks too good to be true, it probably is.
- Do not provide any “retailer” with your Social Security number, or more information than someone would reasonably need to fulfill your transaction.
- Do not correspond to unsolicited emails or SMS with offers unless it is a reputable retailer.
Remember, cyberthieves can steal identities and issue credit cards for under $100 — and use those stolen numbers immediately. Law enforcement officials have estimated that the cost of the CVV security number on the back of the credit card is about $10 each when sold online and it costs very little to change the billing address on an account if crooks have sufficient identity details.
Of course, those details are harvested from unsuspecting victims using social networking sites and other online resources.
Happy shopping!
